Yahoo! Sports published another lengthy report regarding rule-breaking in college football -- it was Yahoo! Sports that introduced the world to Miami booster Nevin Shapiro, you'll recall -- and the headline on this latest exclusive, authored by Charles Robinson and Rand Getlin, is: "Documents, text messages reveal improper benefits to five SEC players."
Two played at Tennessee, two more at Mississippi State. Nobody much cares about those, though. What resonated was that D.J. Fluker, the All-American tackle on Alabama's 2012 BCS titlists, was implicated for, among other things, receiving a $1,200 king-sized bedroom set from former Tide player Luther Davis, who is said to have acted as a go-between agents and players. The name of the store selling the bedroom set? Sticks N Stuff.
In a side note, the former Alabama All-American safety Mark Barron was also mentioned in text messages acquired by Yahoo! Sports. Barron played on Bama's 2011 BCS title team.
So: If the NCAA can prove that Alabama used players who had received impermissible benefits -- and were therefore ineligible -- in two BCS title games that the Tide won, would the NCAA have any choice but to vacate the victories in those games? And would the BCS have any choice but to void those championships, as happened with Southern Cal's 2004 title after the Reggie Bush violations came to light? And would Alabama also be stripped of the 2012 SEC title, a game in which Fluker likewise played? (There's no 2011 SEC championship to forfeit, though. Alabama didn't win that one.)
Georgia fans shouldn't get excited, though. Even if the conference crown was taken from Alabama, it wouldn't fall to Georgia, which lost to the Tide last December in the Georgia Dome. The 2012 league title would be rendered "vacated." Same as what happened with Georgia Tech after it was penalized for using Demaryius Thomas in the 2009 ACC championship game against Clemson.
Nick Saban has four BCS titles, at least as we speak, two more than any other coach has managed. As we know, Bama faces a rather key game Saturday in College Station, Texas. After news of the the Yahoo! Sports report broke yesterday, Saban informed his post-practice media audience he didn't want to discuss it and, when asked repeatedly to discuss it, stormed out of the room. (The linked video comes courtesy of AL.com.) His exit line: "Appreciate your interest in the game."
We should note that Dan Wetzel, also of Yahoo! Sports, doesn't believe the Tide title(s) will be stripped. Wetzel is savvy about NCAA doings, and he writes:
The NCAA won't be able to get enough people to talk. They won't be able to access the paper trail. It's possible they won't even muster much of an effort. There isn't a direct tie to the coaching staffs. The schools involved, Alabama, Mississippi State and Tennessee, will solemnly declare their concern, even though the latter two are already on probation for previous things that produced solemn concern. Maybe Volunteers defensive lineman Maurice Couch, the only still-eligible participant, gets hit a little, but that'll be it. And that's fine. The NCAA always looks foolish when it tries to retroactively strip championships – in this case, Alabama's.
But we must also note that the NCAA, which still hasn't penalized Miami and could find no proof of wrongdoing regarding Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, is under heavy pressure from membership and media to get the goods on somebody. (The Cam Newton matter, and the NCAA's inability to penalize anybody for anything, continues to resonate.) And there would seem a rather strong electronic trail in the text messages reported by Yahoo! Sports.
It would still be a surprise if Alabama had to forfeit one or two of its crystal footballs. But I'm not sure it would be a total shock.
