Georgia Tech ran the option better, and still it lost

It was another losing day for Paul Johnson in Miami.

These short takes from Georgia Tech’s 45-30 loss at Miami are presented as an adjunct to the game column, which can be found on myajc.com, our premium site.

    1. At the start, Georgia Tech ran the option pretty much as Paul Johnson designed it. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 151 yards in the first quarter, scoring on their first three possessions. But Vad Lee’s fumble at the Miami 22 -- at a time when Tech was poised to take a 24-7 lead -- changed the game. The Hurricanes defended against the option better in the second half, and Lee could complete only five of 13 passes for 63 yards.

      2. The defense, which played pretty well over the first four games, played less well in Game 5. The Hurricanes finished with 551 yards and generated a 324-yard passer (Stephen Morris), a 184-yard rusher (Duke Johnson) and a 108-yard receiver (Allen Hurns). Even with four turnovers, Miami still won going away – and that isn’t supposed to happen against quality opposition. Afterward linebacker Quayshawn Nealy would say that Tech had “a communication problem” in trying to align itself against Miami’s hurry-up stuff.

        3. In a flashback to the Georgia game of 2010, Tech missed an extra point to tie in the fourth quarter. The Jackets’ special teams aren’t nearly as awful as they were, but this miss recalled memories of the bad old days. Backup long snapper Trevor Stroebel, pressed into service after Sean Tobin was hurt against Virginia Tech, delivered a ground ball to holder Sean Poole, who couldn’t get the laces aligned properly. Harrison Butker pulled the PAT to the left. Granted a reprieve, the Hurricanes scored three touchdowns over the next 9 ½ minutes.

From myajc.com: A better Georgia Tech effort yields only an emphatic loss.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
