Dogs overcome injuries and own defense in win

I’ll post my full column off of Georgia’s narrow escape -- a 34-31 overtime win over Tennessee, later on MyAJC.com. Until then, here are my three "Short Takes on the game.

1. GEORGIA'S PROBLEM ISN'T RESOLVE, IT'S LIGAMENTS: The Bulldogs' offense finished the game effectively without its top two running backs (Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall) and top three receivers (Malcolm Mitchell, Michael Bennett and Justin Scott-Wesley). Gurley did not play because of ankle injury (he should be back next week). Mitchell was lost weeks ago to a torn ACL. Marshall, Bennett and Scott-Wesley all were lost with knee injuries in the Tennessee game, and all three look serious. Coach Mark Richt said afterward he didn't have any definite specifics about "the carnage" but there was a concern that Marshall's and Scott-Wesley's injuries could be season-ending. Georgia has shown its strength in tough situations this season. That will have to continue, particularly with the shortage of bodies now. If Gurley can get and stay healthy, the running game should be OK. But injuries have been an issue for him. What this means is that now more than ever, the onus to lead is on (go to No. 2) ...

2. IF GEORGIA COMES THROUGH THIS, IT WILL BE BECAUSE OF AARON MURRAY: The Georgia quarterback had a 57-yard run near the end of the third quarter to set up a go-ahead touchdown run. When Tennessee shockingly rallied again and pulled ahead 31-24 with under two minutes left, the senior came through again. This is becoming old hat for him. He completed passes to Reggie Davis, Rhett McGowan and Brendan Douglas before completing a 10-play, 75-yard game-tying touchdown drive with a two-yard score to Rantavious Wooten. An argument can now be made that Murray, who completed passes to eight different receivers, has become the best clutch quarterback in Georgia history. "He's at another level from where he was last year," offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. "There's a calmness about him now that I've never seen before." Agreed. If Georgia survives this run of injuries, it will be because of Murray.

3. THIS DEFENSE IS RUNNING OUT OF EXCUSES: I understand that Georgia has a lot of youth on the defensive side of the ball. But there is no excuse -- none -- for the play we've witnessed this season from coordinator Todd Grantham's defensive unit. The Dogs entered the game allowing an SEC worst 32.5 points per game -- granted, partly the residual of facing Clemson, South Carolina and LSU so early -- and they just gave up 34 points and 404 yards (including 189 rushing) to the conference's worst offense. In the end, the Dogs won not just because of their resolve on offense but because Tennessee running back Pig Howard -- on a second effort and untouched -- dove for the pylon and fumbled the ball out of the end zone in overtime for a touchback. It wasn't because of defensive brilliance. Linebacker Jordan Jenkins admitted: "We've got a lot of work to do."

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
