Frank Sinatra was The Man. No, strike that. Frank IS and will always be The Man. Back in the early '80s, during my Vegas years, I used to drive down the Strip, past Caesars' Palace, and the billboard out front would read simply, "He's here!"
Because really, what else need be said?
Back then, as a callow youth, I never took advantage of the chance to see Sinatra live and in person. I had other things on my mind at the time, and not a lot of cash to do it with. The idea of a "bucket list" -- the list of things you want to do before you die -- has become pretty popular, but I wonder what you'd call the list of things that you wish you had done, but now never can.
My own list wouldn't be that long. But whatever you call it, not seeing Sinatra when I had the chance would be on it.
The list of great Sinatra recordings goes on and on, but my two personal favorites share a melancholy mood and highlight his skill as a storyteller. One is "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road). Here's Frank as he records the other one, an autumnal accounting of a life fully lived, with few if any regrets for those things left undone:
