Sensing a possible political advantage, Democrats and the Obama campaign went on the attack against Republican Mitt Romney over a secret video made at a May fund raising event where he said nearly half of Americans think they are "victims."  

"This is unreal," said Rep. John Lewis (D-GA). "This is unbelievable."

"Something is wrong, something is strange about that way of thinking," Lewis said in an interview.

The Obama campaign issued a web video looking to capitalize on the dustup as well, accusing Romney of being out of touch, while the White House threw a few elbows as well.

"When you're president of the United States, you are president of all the people, not just the people who voted for you," said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

One humorous moment in the daily briefing for reporters came when one scribe reminded Carney of his column - back when he worked for Time Magazine in 2008 - that dinged Sen. Obama for his own taped comments in a fund raising event, which belittled some voters for "clinging" to the religion and guns.

Carney sidestepped a question on that, saying he didn't remember writing that column, an answer that drew laughs from reporters.

Democrats meanwhile started trying to raise money off the Romney remarks that "47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," as they tried to strike for maximum advantage.

"If we fail to in November, we'll have a President who has admitted he doesn't care about half the country," said Chris Redfern, the Chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, who asked for a donation of $4.70, riffing on the 47% remark.

Obviously no one knows how much of an impact this will have on the race; it certainly kept Romney off message for yet another day, even as new Gallup tracking poll numbers showed the edge for President Obama dropping to 1% nationally, down from a seven point lead a week ago.
