Sometimes in the Congress there are hearings that are just too good to ignore, and that's true in the U.S. Senate, where a committee will hold a hearing on legislation that would establish a "uniform national standard for the housing and treatment of egg-laying hens."
While that title may draw some chuckles, it is evidently a big deal in the egg production community.
Basically, the Humane Society wants hens to have more space to live; they tried to get these provisions in the Farm Bill, but did not succeed.
Here's the rundown on the hearing today before the Senate Agriculture Committee:
The Committee will hold a legislative hearing on S. 3239, the "Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012." The author of the legislation, Senator Dianne Feinstein will testify, as will Mr. David Lathem, Chairman of the United Egg Producers; Mr. Eric Benson, President of J.S. West and Companies; Mr. Greg Herbruck, Executive Vice President of Herbruck's Poultry Ranch; and Mr. Amon Baer, Owner of Mendelson Egg Company.
