Ranking ACC DC salaries

I mentioned in the story about the contract for new Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof that, in terms of average annual salary, made him the second-highest paid defensive coordinator in the ACC, at least by reported salaries for coaches at the the league's eight public schools. The list:

1. Brent Venables, Clemson, 4 years, $800,000 (going into second year)

2. Ted Roof, Georgia Tech, 3 years, $550,000 (going into first year)

3. Jon Tenuta, Virginia, 5 years, $500,000 (going into first year)

Jeremy Pruitt, Florida State, 3 years, $500,000 (going into first year. Pruitt's salary was originally reported at around $540,000. A copy of the contract I received Wednesday put him at $500,000.)

5. Bud Foster, Virginia Tech, five years, $471,762 (This is a little tricky. Foster's reported salary was for this past year. Second, Foster's contract automatically rolls over every season, Paul Hewitt-style, so it perpetually remains at five years. Third, he is due an $800,000 annuity payment if he is still on staff at the end of the 2014 season, so to call him the fifth-highest paid defensive coordinator in the ACC is technically accurate but isn't the whole picture.)

6. Dave Huxtable, N.C. State, three years, $450,000 (going into first year)

7. Brian Stewart, Maryland, 2 years, 350,000 (going into second year)

8. Dan Disch, Vic Koenning, North Carolina, $250,000 (both going into second year. Disch is defensive coordinator, Koenning is associate head coach for defense. Contract length unavailable.)

A few notes and thoughts:

1. Roof will receive a $10,000 bonus for each statistical category that the Tech defense finishes in the top five in the ACC for conference games: scoring defense, total defense, third-down defense, red-zone defense and takeaways.

2. Interesting that there are so many new coordinators. Including Pittsburgh and Syracuse, seven defensive coordinators will be starting their first season, including Roof, another four will be in their second season and two more are going into their third and fourth seasons. Foster is the outlier, going into his 19th season as the Hokies coordinator.

3. Pruitt's salary is intriguing. Pruitt, who came to FSU from Alabama, was secondary coach for three seasons there and has never been a coordinator at the college level, but he'll earn the same salary as Tenuta, who has been a coordinator by title for 16 years. It speaks to, among other things, how much of a hot commodity he was (Alabama evidently wanted him to stay as position coach; he is said to be a great recruiter) and the considerable budget that FSU coach Jimbo Fisher must have, despite the fact that the FSU athletic department is running in the red.
