Notes: Washington receives honor

Tevin Washington
Tevin Washington will likely work out as a wide receiver or defensive back for NFL scouts.

1. Former Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington received the college MVP award from the Montgomery Quarterback Club ast week. The club typically gives the honor to unsung players with state ties.

Washington, from nearby Wetumpka, Ala., said he was “just grateful, thankful. I know I had a decent year this year, so just thankful for somebody recognizing and giving me recognition.”

Washington set ACC and school records this season for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a career (38) and a season (20). His 20 touchdowns also set the school record for touchdowns in a season. Last year's winner was former Alabama tight end Brad Smelley.

Washington is training for Tech’s pro day, planning to audition as a wide receiver or defensive back.

“It’s coming along,” he said.

2. Washington is one of eight Tech players hoping for a shot at the NFL. Aside from the five I’ve written about the most – defensive linemen T.J. Barnes and Izaan Cross, running back Orwin Smith, cornerback Rod Sweeting and guard Omoregie Uzzi – the final two are wide receiver Chris Jackson and long snapper Tyler Morgan.

Jackson, undoubtedly, is finding inspiration in former Tech walk-on wide receiver Kevin Cone, who earned a spot on the Falcons practice squad and then active roster after catching six passes as a senior.

Barnes and Sweeting were both invited to participate in the NFL scouting combine, which begins Wednesday in Indianapolis.

3. The ACC schedule could come out this week. Tech officials thought it would come out last week, but, obviously, it did not. A sticking point may be the same one that delayed the schedule release last year, the Labor Day game. A Pittsburgh-Florida State matchup had been reported as a possibility, but Villanova, which Pitt is scheduled to play Aug. 31, is having trouble rearranging its schedule.
