Test of leadership as BYU week begins

It was August, and Georgia Tech brimmed with hope. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof shared some kind words about his many seniors, how they were taking on coaching roles with younger players. “When your kids are doing that, it’s a good thing, but you know what?” Roof asked. “The true test ...

4 takeaways from Tech-Miami

1. In his post-game radio interview, coach Paul Johnson made the statement that “we would have needed to play near-perfect and not make mistakes (to win). Right now, we’re not good enough to do that.” That says a lot right there. Miami is better. Virginia Tech is better. It’s hard ...

Notes: Deon Hill 'all good'

A little later than advertised, but hopefully worth the wait. 1. Hopefully you read the story I wrote for the paper and myajc.com about A-back Deon Hill, who will play his first game after being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and missing the past three games. I probably don't consider this ...

Long snapper out for Tech vs. Miami

The bad news for Georgia Tech is that long snapper Sean Tobin has been ruled out for Saturday’s game against Miami. The good news is that you probably didn’t even realize that Tobin missed part of last Thursday’s game against Virginia Tech. It will be the job of long snapper ...

Ask a Miami beat writer

For this week's report, I'm turning to Matt Porter, my colleague at one of the AJC's sister papers, the Palm Beach Post. This is Matt's first year on the beat. You can read his stuff here and follow him on Twitter here. My thanks to Matt. 1. What are one ...

Getting Zach Laskey a 100-yard game isn’t necessarily an objective against Miami Saturday.

Tech tries to fire up interior run game

Georgia Tech center Jay Finch knows his place. “I’m just a pawn in the chess game,” he said. “I just do what I’m told. ‘Take the bishop.’ Yes, sir. Whatever he asks.” The “he,” of course, would be coach Paul Johnson. Part of this week’s imperative to Finch and his ...

Attaochu honed in on Miami

Georgia Tech defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu has had a pickup in productivity in the past two games, with three total tackles in both games and a tackle for loss in each. As Miami plays a pro-style offense, Attaochu will likely have more time to get to quarterback Stephen Morris, although ...

Notes: Tech looks for new return man

Apologies for the lack of posts up yesterday – busy day with Paul Johnson’s news conference, followed by Brian Gregory, men’s basketball media day, post-practice interviews and three stories for the paper. A lot of stuff that I’ll get out to you over the next few days. But, where else ...

Georgia Tech quarterback Vad Lee had 144 yards passing and 35 yards rushing against Virginia Tech.

Practice habits sank Tech vs. Hokies

The seeds for Georgia Tech’s defeat to Virginia Tech were sown on the Alexander-Rose Bowl practice fields. Quarterback Vad Lee said that after the team’s 3-0 start had affected its psyche. “The main thing I take from (the loss) is I felt like we got a little complacent with 3-0 ...

Tech's Miami problem

As October begins (tomorrow, at any rate), Georgia Tech has arrived upon what could well be the defining game of the season. As a result of the toe stubbing last Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium, Georgia Tech is in what has the looks of a must-win game on the ...

Georgia Tech quoteboard

“They played better than we did. Probably coached better than we did. I’ve never seen so many mistakes. It seemed like every series that we had the ball on offense, we either jumped offsides or had a penalty.” Coach Paul Johnson “It was a comedy of errors. Even some of ...

4 takeaways from Hokies-Jackets

Some thoughts from Thursday night's debacle. 1. Vad Lee played like a first-year starter As Paul Johnson put it on Monday, “He’s at the point in his career where one play you want to choke him and the next play you’re ready to hug him because he does something (extraordinary). ...

Notes: Scheduling, Grant Field history and more

I meant to write this this morning, but mornings have a way of getting away from me. In general, all increments of time do. Anyway, a lot of stuff left over that I either that I didn’t get to this week. Without further ado… 1. On myajc.com, I wrote about ...

Jamal Golden out for Virginia Tech game

Georgia Tech safety Jamal Golden has been ruled out of Thursday night’s game with Virginia Tech. Golden injured his shoulder in the Yellow Jackets’ win over North Carolina last Saturday and had hoped to return, but was evidently unable. Golden and A-back Deon Hill, who is waiting to be cleared ...

Ask a Virginia Tech beat writer

My friend Norm Wood of the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., covers Virginia Tech and was good enough to answer my questions about the Hokies, at great length and with considerable detail. My thanks to Norm. You can follow him on Twitter here and read his stuff online here. ...

Lavette named ACC legend

Robert Lavette, Georgia Tech’s all-time leading rusher, has been named to the ACC Legends class of 2013. Lavette, one of just five ACC running backs to clear 4,000 yards, will be honored at the ACC championship game in Charlotte Dec. 7. Lavette played for Tech 1981-84 for coach Bill Curry, ...

Tech needs better first quarter

On the list of fairly meaningless things that coaches say and sports writers ask about, “We want to get off to a fast start” and “How important is it to get off to a fast start?” are probably top five, maybe top three. Off the top of my head, I’m ...

Georgia Tech will use this jersey, reminiscent of the uniform worn in the mid part of the 20th century, against Virginia Tech on Sept. 26, 2013.

White-out set for Thursday night

There’s a lot on tap for Thursday. If you’re attending, make sure you get there early. The Braves play at Turner Field at 7:10 p.m., so I imagine traffic will be a breeze. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Parking decks open at 5 p.m. Starting also at 5 p.m., the ...

Will Jackson Q&A

Invariably insightful, Georgia Tech guard Will Jackson answered a few questions after Sunday night's practice as the Yellow Jackets cleaned up mistakes from the North Carolina game and began preparations for Virginia Tech. The best run blocker in last summer's SunTrust Robinson Humphrey internship class gave his take on Virginia ...

Georgia Tech safety Jamal Golden injured his shoulder against North Carolina last Saturday.

Golden likely to play Thursday

Georgia Tech safety Jamal Golden said the plan is for him to play in Thursday’s game against Virginia Tech. Golden, who injured his shoulder against North Carolina last Saturday, was in a gold jersey Monday, meaning he was held out of contact drills. "It's sore, but I'm fine," Golden said. ...

Yellow Jackets even found trouble during pregame

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
