Before we begin dissecting Georgia State’s upcoming game against top-ranked Alabama, let’s go back to one of the more unexpected plays in the university’s sports history.
Coincidentally, it also came against the school the Panthers will play on Saturday.
Yes, I’m talking about Albert Wilson’s 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
It came with a few minutes left in the first half.
Alabama had just taken a 42-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Eddie Lacy.
I’ll let him take it from there.
Q: What do you remember about that play?
A: I remember that play before, I lost the ball. Darren McCray asked me, “Do you want your revenge?” I looked at him and told him, ”Yeah.”
They kicked it to me. It was a great feeling after that.
Q: Do you remember the run, or was it all just a blur?
A: I remember me going inside, and then breaking a tackle and then pushing toward the sideline. High-stepping up the sideline and scoring.
Q: Do you have a tape of it? Do you watch it every now and then?
A: Every now and then. It’s saved on my computer.
To elaborate, Wilson caught the ball near the left hash and began to run right.
He sidestepped one tackle near the 20-yard line and then ran through an ankle tackle at the 30-yard line as he continued his left-to-right diagonal.
Then, it was a race to the edge.
Wilson got there first, turning at the 45-yard line and heading up field.
It was the second kickoff return for the Panthers that season. It was the first given up by Alabama that season.
