Pertile, Kaplan may switch on Georgia State's line

By Doug Roberson

Georgia State may start its third different combination of starters on the offensive line when the Panthers host Jacksonville State on Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Freshman Brandon Pertile, who made his first career start at West Virginia last week as a guard, may switch to tackle this week. That would allow A.J. Kaplan, who started the first three games at tackle, to switch to guard, which is his natural position.

If Pertile continues to develop his strength in the offseason, this may be the right side of the line that Georgia State fans will see next year.

However, it may be the last time they see it this year.

Why?

Because Grant King will return from his academic-related suspension for the next game against Alabama on Oct. 5 and may slide back into his old spot at tackle.

So what will coach Trent Miles do with Pertile?

Good question.

He will play because his redshirt is now gone (barring injury). So I would bet that he and King may split time at the position. Pertile may eventually this season even get a few plays at left tackle, where Ulrick John plays, because like King, John is a senior and will be gone after this year.

So the starters for this week’s game may be:

Pertile-Kaplan-Yates-Wynn-John.

Georgia State rushed for a season best 130-plus yards last week with this combination on the line and could have an even better day on Saturday. Kaplan may help the team get a better push up the middle, which should open up more channels for the running backs. That’s not a knock on Pertile, it’s more of a reflection of Kaplan’s experience and maturity.

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.
