Georgia State’s Trent Miles has coached in a lot of great stadiums, but he will get to check off one still left on his “bucket list” when the Panthers take on Alabama in historic Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.
“It’s got to be right up there,” he said of the stadium, which opened in 1929.
Miles ran off a list of some of the places he has coached: Notre Dame Stadium, Florida State’s Doak Campbell, the L.A. Coliseum, Rose Bowl, Michigan Stadium, Neyland Stadium, Lambeau Field, Soldier Field, the Cotton Bowl, Sun Devils Stadium, Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and Texas Stadium, to name a few.
“All of them are wonderful atmospheres, great experiences,” he said. “I’m sure I’m leaving something out.”
He wouldn’t name a favorite.
“There’s some great ones out there,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to experiencing this one.”
Like a lot of people, Miles said that he usually tries to keep something from some of the great places or interesting moments in his career.
He’s not sure what he’s going to keep from Saturday’s game, but he said it will go into his family room in the basement.
Whatever he takes, it will be joining what sounds like an unbelievable collection of mementos.
A few highlights:
Miles has a picture given to him by Brett Favre when the two were together on the Packers. It’s autographed, “I love you, man.”
Miles said that was their saying.
He also has an NFL football autographed by Reggie White and Favre.
“I have a lot of cool stuff,” he said.
Miles’ father was an umpire in baseball, back judge in football and official in basketball. Miles has a picture of his dad standing underneath the basket during a free throw. Larry Bird is leaning over talking to him.
Miles also has a picture of himself and Bird hanging out after a game. Miles said he has known Bird from before he enrolled at Indiana State.
Turning to Atlanta sports icons, Miles has a photo of himself and Hank Aaron taken after Aaron addressed a pep rally at Notre Dame.
