Which GSU players will win CAA awards?

The votes were in a long time ago, but R.J. Hunter should win at least one award at the Colonial Athletic Association “say goodbye to Georgia State” dinner later today.

If Hunter doesn’t win the freshman of the year award then every conspiracy theory I’ve heard about the conference and the school would be justified.

Hunter was the top scoring freshman in the conference at 17 points per game (sixth-best overall in the league). That average actually placed him amongst the five best freshmen in the country. He also finished top-five in steals, top 1o in field-goal percentage, top 10 in free-throw percentage, top 10 in 3-point field-goal percentage and top-three in 3-pointers made.

He tied a conference record with 10 3-pointers in the victory over Old Dominion in one of the single-best performances I’ve ever seen personally. (If you’re curious, Roddy Jones’ 200+ rushing yards against Georgia is on that list, as is Keegan Bradley’s comeback at the PGA Championship and my son’s Will’s first goal in soccer when he was 4 years old).

Should he be considered for the conference’s player of the year award? Probably not. After that performance against ODU his scoring and shooting percentages decreased slightly. Coach Ron Hunter, R.J.’s dad, said many times that his son was already running out of gas by that point. Still, he hit 43.9 percent of his field goals, 36.5 percent of his 3-pointers and grabbed 5.1 rebounds per game.

Who else on Georgia State might win some hardware?

Center James Vincent averaged 2.3 blocks per game, the second-best mark in the conference. He should have received consideration for defensive player of the year at most and all-defensive team honors would seem to be a lock.

Devonta White and Manny Atkins should have received consideration for the all-conference teams. White averaged 14.8 points per game (ninth-best in the conference) and Atkins averaged 14.2 (12th best). Atkins was also one of the best rebounders in the league, pulling down an average of 6.7 per game.

Who do you think will be honored when the awards come out later today?
