UGA will have one of its biggest recruiting weekends for Saturday’s LSU game:
Arguably the most important recruit in attendance will be Lorenzo Carter, the 5-star defensive end from Norcross High School. He is rated as the state’s No. 1 overall prospect. Carter is coming off an official visit last weekend to Florida, which is one of his three leaders, along with UGA and Alabama. This is Carter’s second official visit with the Bulldogs within the last month. He also attended the South Carolina game.
The state’s No. 1 prospect at linebacker, Liberty County High School’s Raekwon McMillan, will be there. Unless most other recruits, McMillan will be in attendance on an official visit rather than unofficial. This may be UGA’s final chance to make a big impression on McMillan, who has Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State among his leaders. UGA has to gain a lot of ground but will have the opportunity this weekend.
The state’s No. 1 prospect for next year, North Gwinnett High School offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt, also plans to be there. This will be Hyatt’s second unofficial visit to UGA, as he also attended the South Carolina game. Hyatt has not declared any frontrunner, although most feel like he will pick Clemson because of family connections.
Tucker High School defensive tackle Elisha Shaw will be at the game. It will be interesting to see how his recruiting unfolds over the next few months. Shaw has had a rough year, missing this season and last spring’s practices with neck or knee injuries. UGA and Alabama are his leaders, followed by Ole Miss.
Stockbridge High School cornerback Kendarius Webster will make an unofficial visit to UGA. Webster has Florida State and Ole Miss as his leaders, followed by the Bulldogs.
Some UGA commits expected to be there: Marist lineman Kendall Baker, Heard County offensive lineman Jake Edwards, Carrollton High School defensive tackle Dontavius Russell, and Ridgeland High School wide receiver Shakenneth Williams.
Lassiter High School defensive back Chris Murphy (committed to Arkansas) will go to the Arkansas vs. Texas A&M game.
Sandy Creek High School wide receiver Demarre Kitt, the former UGA commit, will go to Clemson vs. Wake Forest. He’s pledged now to the Tigers.
Tailback J.J. Green said he can’t say for sure how many times he has heard “you’re one play away from playing” from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon.
Here is a clue that your trip to sunny south Florida may not be a carefree vacation: You’re a football team, and you lose one of your starters during warm-ups.
If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.
Having been at Georgia four seasons now, soccer coach Steve Holeman doesn’t weird out nearly as much as he once did about playing Ole Miss, where he coached for 15 years.
