The state of Florida has been good to UGA this year.
The Bulldogs picked up their fifth commitment from the Sunshine State when 4-star defensive end Keyon Brown pledged to them over FSU and Miami on Thursday at Hardee High School.
“I think the big reason was he liked the way they talked about him fitting in the defensive scheme -- He will be a part of the defensive scheme,” said Hardee coach Buddy Martin. “I also think the family-first atmosphere that Coach Richt brings to the football program is a big deal to him.”
The 6-foot-3, 248-pound Brown is UGA’s No. 17 commitment for the 2014 class, and the fifth from Florida, along with RB Sony Michel, safety Kendall Gant, OL Isaiah Wynn, and WR Gilbert Johnson.
Brown’s coach gave credit to UGA assistants Bryan McClendon and Todd Grantham for securing his star player.
“Coach McClendon is really, really nice,” Martin said. “He’s a younger guy and did a good job of appealing to Keyon. He spoke his language a little bit. He’s a very humble guy. I like (McClendon) and I enjoy talking to him."
“Coach Grantham came down this spring to watch practice. I think they both did a good job of selling of Georgia. They did a good job of selling their program and what they had to offer. Georgia did a better job with that than anybody else.
Brown, who took an official visit to UGA last week, gets a lot of props for his athleticism for his coach.
“There was a play this year where the other team ran a reverse to try to fool Keyon,” Martin said. “Keyon ran lateral with the line of scrimmage. Then you’ve got a 160-pound back who tried to juke our big guy. It didn’t work, and Keyon tackled him for a loss. You just don’t find many kids that big who can run that fast.”

#Rivals100 DE/OLB Keyon Brown is an ideal fit for what #UGA wants to do on defense. Brown is a "wreck the game" type of guy. Great motor.
Tailback J.J. Green said he can’t say for sure how many times he has heard “you’re one play away from playing” from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon.
Here is a clue that your trip to sunny south Florida may not be a carefree vacation: You’re a football team, and you lose one of your starters during warm-ups.
If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.
Having been at Georgia four seasons now, soccer coach Steve Holeman doesn’t weird out nearly as much as he once did about playing Ole Miss, where he coached for 15 years.
