It was the “Battle of the 5-stars” when the state of Georgia’s No. 1 overall senior prospect (Norcross DE Lorenzo Carter) squared off against the state’s top junior (North Gwinnett OL Mitch Hyatt).
Rarely, if ever, do you see head-to-head matchups with this much star power. And when you, quite frankly, they almost never live up to the hype.
However, Lorenzo Carter vs. Mitch Hyatt most definitely exceeded expectations
The two 5-stars got after it against each other for most of the game. Carter’s team had to play from behind, so there were plenty of pass-rushing opportunities against Hyatt. It got surprisingly intense. The two mild-mannered kids had to separated by referees or teammates several times. At one point, one of them pushed the other one’s helmet off during the play. And on another play, another was whistled for a personal foul
Who won the matchup? It’s hard to say until we have the chance to review the entire game film, which was posted online by GPB right HERE. There were many scouts in attendance, including Florida coach Will Muschamp, UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, UGA running backs coach Bryan McClendon (he recruits Gwinnett County for the Bulldogs), and Clemson assistant Tony Elliott (almost everybody is predicting Hyatt will end up with the Tigers because of family connections).
Scouts seem to be impressed with both. If anything, I would think both probably increased their rankings after Friday’s duel.
While the blue-chip battle on the field was extremely intense, the two kids (not surprisingly) showed a lot of class after the game by shaking hands, sharing a brief hug, and exchanging words of praise and respect to each other.
In the above video, we have highlights of the “Battle of the 5-stars,” along with reaction and analysis from both Carter and Hyatt. They also talk a little college recruiting.

Yes! RT @KippLAdams: The battle between OT Mitch Hyatt and DE Lorenzo Carter has been as advertised. #fivestarshowdown
In BYU, Georgia Tech will face a defense that is one of the toughest in the nation to score against and has a playmaking force in outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy.
Tailback J.J. Green said he can’t say for sure how many times he has heard “you’re one play away from playing” from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon.
Here is a clue that your trip to sunny south Florida may not be a carefree vacation: You’re a football team, and you lose one of your starters during warm-ups.
If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.
