UGA’s football recruiting is getting some big help from the school’s athletic department.

Beginning with Saturday’s showdown against South Carolina, recruits attending UGA home games will have much better seating.

The majority of the UGA targets will now sit in the lower-level section behind the East end zone -- allowing them to be much closer to the field and, more importantly, get a better experience of the atmosphere at

“Yes, we have changed seat locations for some prospective student-athletes,” said Jim Booz, UGA’s senior associate director of athletics.

“Members of our staff have worked hard and put forth much effort related to this move, and we do believe it will benefit the University of Georgia and our prospective student-athletes.”

In past years, UGA recruits were mainly seated far away from the field in either a mid-level section or the dreaded upper deck. Some of the mid-level seats will be retained but the majority of recruits will be in the lower section.

Booz says this is a permanent move, which will boost UGA’s recruiting efforts with home games against South Carolina and LSU this month. Many of the Southeast’s top prospects will be in attendance at both contests.

This is the second major recruiting initiative that UGA has made in the last 18 months, following the hiring of Daryl Jones as the full-time Director of On-Campus Recruiting in May 2012.

Next on the UGA wishlist (in my opinion) would be expanding the recruiting staff to a size closer to Alabama’s off-the-field personnel, along with athletic director Greg McGarity backing off his yearly agreement with Florida to not give tickets to recruits for the Georgia-Florida game at the neutral location of Jacksonville (which greatly favors Florida, and hurts UGA with its recruiting efforts in that state).

What do I think about UGA giving better seating to recruits at home game? It was an excellent decision, and long overdue. I cannot say this enough: Recruiting is the lifeblood of your football program. Anything you can do within NCAA rules to improve the fan experience for a recruit when he is on your campus is a no-brainer.

Yellow Jackets even found trouble during pregame

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
