Wheeler QB Elijah Staley is one of the state's top two-sport athletes. He has a high ceiling of potential in football, but is considered a better basketball player at this point. He is committed to Mississippi State after backing off an early pledge to Vanderbilt
One of the state’s top quarterbacks was dismissed from his high school team, via Score Atlanta's Craig Sager II.
Elijah Staley is a 6-foot-6 quarterback from Wheeler High School who is committed to Mississippi State. Here’s what happened in last Friday’s 38-9 loss to Milton, according to the Clarion-Ledger’s John Talty.
"Staley wanted the ability to check-down plays and make adjustments at the line of scrimmage, according to Staley's father, Norman Campbell, while the only thing he was allowed to change was pass protection. After the game Wheeler coach Mike Collins wanted Staley to apologize over his complaints, which Staley refused to do. Staley was remorseful over the disagreement, but felt strongly that he should be able to do more with the offense."
Staley told the Clarion-Ledger: “I apologized for how I approached the situation but I didn’t apologize for what I said. I don’t feel the need to because that’s how I feel.” Collins had yet to respond to an interview request from the website. The entire situation could be a red flag to college scouts.
Staley said there’s a “99-percent chance” he graduates early from Wheeler and enrolls at Mississippi State in January. That’s a pretty big deal because he’s considered one of the state’s top basketball players, and an early departure would affect Wheeler’s championship hopes.
Staley’s parents commented on situation on Twitter.
A 17 year old kid gets into it with his coach ONE TIME & Gets kicked off the team???!!!! Never been in trouble with the coach.. ever! Smh..
Tailback J.J. Green said he can’t say for sure how many times he has heard “you’re one play away from playing” from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon.
Here is a clue that your trip to sunny south Florida may not be a carefree vacation: You’re a football team, and you lose one of your starters during warm-ups.
If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.
Having been at Georgia four seasons now, soccer coach Steve Holeman doesn’t weird out nearly as much as he once did about playing Ole Miss, where he coached for 15 years.
