Alabama’s Nick Saban, who couldn’t flip UGA QB signee Brice Ramsey of Camden County High School this past year, is having some monster success at the South Georgia powerhouse this month.
Alabama landed the second 4-star recruit out of Camden County in a week when safety Chris Williams announced on Twitter that he had pledged to the Crimson Tide on Tuesday.
Williams picked Alabama over Florida State, according to his Camden County teammate Kalvaraz Bessent, a cornerback who pledged to the Crimson Tide last week.
“I’m excited about us playing together in college,” Bessent told the AJC. “Chris is like a brother to me. We’ve been playing football together since the sixth or seventh grade. We’re going to continue to push each other and work hard together.”
Bessent said he wasn’t surprised by the decision of Williams, who was at track practice on late Tuesday. “No, it wasn’t a surprise. I kind of knew. He was high on Florida State for a while. I was telling him he should go to Alabama. I guess he thought about it, and he figured that Alabama was the right place for him, too.”
Bessent liked Alabama over UGA and Florida, and he pushed up his college decision for several reasons, including the fact that Camden County is going through a coaching change. He also wanted to be pledged to a college before his high school spring practice to be protected in case of injury.
Williams likely also considered some of the same factors before making his decision, too.
“I’m excited for Chris, part of his thinking is ‘Kalvaraz is going to Alabama’ and that makes him feel a little more comfortable,” former Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the AJC. “What’s not to be impressed about Alabama? You’ve got a chance to play for a national championship. You’ve got a chance to play in the NFL. Coach Saban is as good as there is in the business. Those kids, they look for all of that. It’s hard to say it’s a bad decision on any account.”
Herron said that Williams is being recruited to play cornerback at Alabama but could switch to running back and maybe even wide receiver, if needed.
Alabama now has three commitments for its 2014 class.
Last year, Saban spent some time at Camden County heavily flirting with Ramsey, including a 90-minute Skype session. However, Ramsey decided to stick with UGA and enrolled at the college in January.
