Coach of former Georgia Tech recruit gets prank calls

By Michael Carvell

A high school coach said he got some pranks calls after publicly commenting on why one of his top players is no longer committed to Georgia Tech.

Jeremi Hall, an offensive lineman from Tri Cities High School, was a longtime Georgia Tech commit who took an official visit to South Florida last weekend without telling the Yellow Jackets coaches and had his scholarship offer withdrawn, according to JacketsOnline.com. There was also a concern about Hall’s academic progress.

Tri Cities coach Kenneth Miller contacted the AJC on Thursday:

“I really wish it could go away. I know it probably can’t, but I wish I could. I’ve got a family, and I’m not trying to get into anything with Paul Johnson.

“This was an isolated incident where I felt like my kid’s scholarship shouldn’t have been pulled. They should’ve kept the kid on board.  I’ve got a family. I’m not against Paul Johnson or Georgia Tech. People need to know I’m sending another player (Shamire DeVine) to play at Georgia Tech.

“I don’t want any more phone calls. I don’t know who is calling me.”

Miller said he didn’t know if the prank calls were from overzealous Georgia Tech fans, or people claiming to be Georgia Tech fans who were really supporters of other schools.

“They are like ‘Why are you messing with Coach Johnson?’” Miller said. “I wasn’t expecting that kind of thing. I didn’t realize people loved Coach Johnson like that. I didn’t really say anything negative about that person in general. But I guess it is what it is because it’s out there. I never anticipated this.”

Miller contacted the AJC to get one message out:

“I want it to be known that I have nothing personal against Coach Johnson. It’s just a position as a coach that you’ve got to take for your kid. You know what I mean? It’s nothing personal against Georgia Tech. I wish him the best with the way he recruits. This was an isolated situation. My comments are general comments for all colleges coaches. That’s pretty much it.”

  • NOTE: Unfortunately, something like this is more common that you would think. A few months ago, someone claiming to be a UGA fan called directly and harrased a Bulldogs recruit to find out his commitment status. YOU CAN READ IT BY CLICKING HERE.
