UGA RB commit calls reports about fake Notre Dame visit 'misunderstanding'

By Michael Carvell

Stanley Williams, who has been committed to UGA for two years, apologized on Monday for misleading reporters that he made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame this weekend.

“I felt a lot of pressure to say I had went on the visit,” Williams told the BlueAndGold.com, the 247sports website for Notre Dame.

“At the time I was supposed to go, but couldn’t go because of some things that I had going on … It was planned to happen but prior to some other engagements. I wasn’t able to make it.”

On Sunday, the running back from George Walton Academy told the same website (along with Notre Dame’s Rivals.com affiliate) about an unofficial visit he made the campus the day before to Notre Dame -- mentioning attendance at a basketball game and describing a conversation he had with Irish assistant Scott Booker.

“It was great to experience something new and different, and we had a great time at the game. I had been looking forward to it for a while, and it was great to just get out there and see a new place. I plan on getting up there a couple more times in the future.”

As it turned out, Williams never made the trip.

A Notre Dame coach saw the original story, and let the website know he never saw Williams on Saturday.

Naturally, with Notre Dame in the headlines for Manti Te’o’s girlfriend hoax, the story about Stanley’s weekend trip went viral in a hurry – and was even picked up by Deadpsin in a story you can read HERE.

Williams committed to UGA at Dawg Night after his freshman year of high school.

UPDATE: When asked about Notre Dame quotes by ESPN Dawg Nation’s Radi Nabulsi in story published on Monday evening, Williams said, “Those are incorrect. I never told anyone I was going anywhere I wouldn't be. I approach the media well, and I tell the truth about my recruitment." Williams also said it was a "misunderstanding."
