Mark Richt to the rescue, secures DB for UGA

UGA’s fears over losing its top cornerback prospect are apparently over.

Sandy Creek High School’s Shaq Wiggins, who has been committed to UGA since last February, has cancelled his remaining official visits to Florida and Texas A&M.

Wiggins reached the decision after having a heart-to-heart conversation with Bulldogs coach Mark Richt during an in-home visit on Wednesday night.

“I just decided that UGA was where I wanted to be and was the right decision,” Wiggins told the AJC.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pounder has been committed to UGA for nearly a year. Because he made such an early pledge, Wiggins wanted to visit some other schools to be sure he was making the right decision. At one point, he also was concerned that the Bulldogs had too many other commitments at cornerback.

After Wiggins took an official visit to South Carolina last week, there were fears that he might be slipping away from UGA.

Richt raced to the rescue, and met with Wiggins this week to secure him for the Bulldogs.

Despite his size, Wiggins is considered to be the team’s best recruit at cornerback this year. He had a lot of doubters but erased them when he held his own against a pair of 5-star wide receivers in practices at the Under Armour All-Amercia game earlier this month.
