New UGA defensive line coach Chris Wilson has now gotten in front of both of the team’s primary DT targets, Toby Johnson and Montravius Adams.

Wilson flew out to Kansas and met with Johnson for a few hours on Monday. He visited briefly with Adams last Friday.

“Yes, I hung out with Coach Wilson for about two or three hours; It went well … I like Coach Wilson a lot,” Johnson told the AJC.

“He made a big impression. We’ve talked a lot over the phone but that was the first time we’ve really had time to sit down and eat. We talked more about life than football, because we’re always talking football.

“He was just a good dude. He was talking to me about academics, trying to see which classes are going to transfer. He is trying to look out for me, and that impressed me a lot.”

Does Toby feel comfortable with the idea of playing for Wilson at UGA? “Yes, I’ve been comfortable with (Wilson). I liked him when he was at Mississippi State. Now that he’s at Georgia, that makes things even better.”

Does UGA still lead for Johnson? “Yes, Georgia is my leader. I haven’t visited any other schools since Georgia. When I left my visit from Georgia, they were my leader, and nothing has changed.”

There were concerns that the departure of former UGA defensive line coach Rodney Garner to Auburn might hurt the Bulldogs. Johnson said it didn’t. However, he has been communicating with Garner. “I still talk to him on a regular basis,” he said. “It’s going very good, and I go down to Auburn next weekend.”

Johnson said he will visit Auburn and Mississippi State over the next two weeks. He will likely announce his college decision on signing day, perhaps even in Atlanta. Johnson graduated from Banneker High School.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder from Hutchinson junior college is still recovering from knee surgery last month. However, Johnson said the rehabilitation is going so well that he might be able to play next season.

“I think I have a good chance, I really do,” Johnson said. “My leg is doing so much better. I’m bending it well. I think the last time I went up to 107 degrees (with the bend), so I’m getting there.”

Even if Johnson doesn’t play next season, he still has three seasons to play two.

Note: We will learn how well Wilson can recruit over the next three weeks. UGA is the school to beat with Johnson, and probably trails Clemson (and maybe Florida) for Adams.

HAVE YOU CAUGHT UP ON THE LATEST?

SO MUCH GOING ON ....

GREATEST HITS

Yellow Jackets even found trouble during pregame

Here is a clue that your trip to sunny south Florida may not be a carefree vacation: You’re a football team, and you lose one of your starters during warm-ups.

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
