Carl Lawson, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect by ESPN, will have a busy week before he leaves on Friday for an official visit with Tennessee.

The defensive end from Milton High School has an in-home visit with North Carolina coach Larry Fedora on Tuesday, with Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner on Wednesday, and with Tennessee assistant Tommy Thigpen on Thursday.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Lawson is officially committed to Auburn but has been listening to suitors since the coaching change.

“I really can’t tell you what he’s going to do; sometimes, it’s hard for me to read him,” his father, Carl Lawson Sr., told the AJC on Monday.

“He’s still committed to Auburn but (his final decision) is something we don’t really talk about that much. I mean, we talk about it, but we’re not going to let it stress us out. If it’s something important, then we’ll talk about it. But right now, Carl is enjoying the process.

“He’s going to evaluate everything. When he’s 100-percent sure on what he’s going to do, then we’ll let people know. As of right now, he’s still committed to Auburn. They’re building a relationship, and he’s fully exploring his options.”

Last week, Lawson finally took his first official visit, touring Clemson.

“I think he had fun, I think it went OK,” Lawson said.

When asked if Clemson was in the running, Lawson replied, “Yes, I guess they are. They are.”

“The positives about Clemson are the proximity, it’s a winning tradition and good program, and there’s the chance to play early. The negatives? I played in the ACC but right now the buzz is about the SEC. That may be an advantage some of the other schools have on Clemson.”

The other schools include Tennessee and Auburn. Lawson will go to Tennessee on Friday and is tentatively scheduled to travel to Auburn on Jan. 25. There’s also the possibility of a midweek visit to North Carolina at some point.

“No, this is not going all the way until signing day,” said Lawson, who played football at Georgia Tech. “I can’t give you a date but it’s not going until then (Feb. 6).”

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
