Could UGA add another member to its 2013 recruiting class?

  Toby Johnson, a defensive tackle from Hutchinson junior college, told the AJC on Friday that he will announce on Feb. 15 between Auburn, Oklahoma, Mississippi State and UGA. He said he has letters of intent from all four.

  “I’m not ready yet,” Johnson said, explaining why he didn’t sign this week.

  “I haven’t taken my official visit yet to Mississippi State. I’m going there on Feb. 15, and after that, I will know.”

  There was one published report saying that UGA had stopped recruiting Johnson due to grades, and there was another one that said Johnson had a “time sensitive” scholarship offer from the Bulldogs.

 Johnson said he didn’t want to go into details, but said he last communicated with UGA on Wednesday. He said he talked to UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Chris Wilson.

  “I got upset when somebody said I was no longer being recruited by Georgia because of my grades,” Johnson said. “That was the case, at one time. But not any more.

  “I’ve got a letter of intent from Georgia, and the other schools. I can send you pictures of it. Why would I lie about an offer? I was the No. 1 recruit in junior college until I got a knee injury. I’ve got plenty of offers. Come on, man.”

  When asked what exactly was said with the Georgia coaches on Wednesday, Johnson said, “I don’t want to put that out in the media. I’m going to keep that between us.”

  Johnson graduated from Atlanta’s Banneker High School, and he was ranked as the nation’s No. 1 JC recruit, prior to his November knee injury. He dropped to No. 8 overall in the final rankings by 247sports.

  After going 2 for 6 on targets on signing day, UGA has 32 signees for 2013. Auburn is considered the top contender for Johnson because of his relationship with Tigers defensive line coach Rodney Garner, the former UGA recruiting coordinator.
