OLB Terrell Lewis of Ocoee, Fla.

By Michael Carvell

  • Prospect: Terrell Lewis, outside linebacker, Ocoee High School of Ocoee, Fla., Class of 2014
  • Colleges: Lewis said he committed to Georgia Tech over UCF on Aug. 3, 2013, among around 15 offers, which also included Miami, Kentucky and LSU. “They are both great programs,” Lewis said of his two finalists. “Don’t get me wrong. UCF is a great school. They’re going to be a top 15 team in a couple of years, but so will Georgia Tech. I kind of want to get out of my comfort zone. I like Orlando but I’d like to live somewhere else, too. I think living in Atlanta would be great.
  • Why Georgia Tech? “I’ve always loved the city. Georgia Tech has a great football team, and a great recruiting class. On top of all that, it offers a great education. My parents will be able to go to the majority of my home games. It was a good situation for me.”
  • Why commit early? “There really wasn’t a reason to wait. Georgia Tech had everything I wanted. My parents really liked it there. Georgia Tech had everything I look for in a coaching staff and, and what I look for with a degree. In my head, I was thinking ‘There is no reason not to go there. Why waste time when I could go ahead and make up my mind?’”
  • Vitals: 6-foot-1, 220 pounds. Has a 3.5 GPA and plans to major in Communications and Broadcasting.
  • Recruiting rankings: TBA
  • Things to know: Mr. Everything at Ocoee, playing seven different positions in one game (safety, inside linebacker, defensive line, wide receiver, running back, punt returner and kickoff returner), according to his coach, Dale Salapa. “Not bad for a guy 6-1, 215 pounds. He can motor.” … Lewis will play outside linebacker at Georgia Tech, but will get some looks at safety. “They described me as a hybrid safety,” Lewis said … Works part-time jobs at University Studios, including dressing up as a character for the Harry Potter attraction
  • They said it:  "He’s a guy that can play outside linebacker or in the middle, if they needed him there. He has a great frame. He’s a really good player who flew under the radar a little bit. Schools like LSU started coming on, and he comes from a pretty educated-oriented family. His father is an engineer. That sort of helped Georgia Tech get him. He was the guy that Georgia Tech went after for at outside linebacker in this class. He was sort of the top guy they had in mind, and they got him. He may have a chance to compete for playing time as soon as he gets here because Brandon Watts, Georgia Tech’s outside linebacker, graduates after (the 2013) season." -- JacketsOnline.com's Kelly Quinlan
  • Something people are surprised to know? “I’m a pretty good volleyball player. My freshman year, I tried to be different. I ended up playing volleyball, and I really liked it. I couldn’t play my sophomore and junior years because of spring football. But I’m actually pretty good at it.”
  • Favorite non-coach teacher? " Ms. Brooks, my fifth-grade teacher at Citrus Elementary. She pushed me hard. She saw my academic potential and pushed me through. She always stayed on me to become a better student.”

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
