Georgia Tech is looking for a few big men with its last remaining basketball scholarships for 2014.
Coach Brian Gregory told the AJC on Tuesday that the Yellow Jackets will sign three players in this recruiting class. They actually have four total scholarships available, but will likely carry one over to next season.
One scholarship has already been claimed: Georgia Tech got off to a hot start this year with last week’s commitment of Tadric Jackson, the 4-star shooting guard from Tift County High School who picked the Yellow Jackets over archrival UGA.
Gregory can’t comment on Jackson (until after he signs in November) or any prospective student-athletes, but did say he felt good about his program’s recruiting efforts.
“I think we’ve good two good classes, in terms of their performance on the court,” Gregory said. “You know, one class is still out there because they haven’t played yet. So I feel good about our first two classes. I think they’ve fit in extremely well. I think they’ve been productive. I think, more importantly, they are big parts of the rebuilding process. They are Georgia Tech guys.
“So I do I like where we’re at, and I think we can carry that (momentum) into our third class as well.”
It’s no secret that Georgia Tech is targeting “bigs” with its last two scholarships, although that could be tweaked if the Yellow Jackets can get a special player at another position.
“It is important that we bring in versatility,” he said. “The fact is we do lose two post players who have logged a lot of minutes in their career in Kammeon Holsey and Daniel Miller. There’s a need to bring in guys with size who have versatility and can play the way we want to play.”
Who will Georgia Tech land with its last two scholarships? The Yellow Jackets are conducting a national search for forwards and centers, according to Rivals.com.
Some of the targets are Elbert Robinson (7-foot-1, 310-pound center from Garland, Texas) and Mitchell Solomon (6-9, 220-pound forward from Bixby, Okla.) Georgia Tech's top homegrown target appears to be Trayvon Reed, the 7-foot, 200-pounder from Shiloh High School.
