Georgia Tech became an instant frontrunner for an offensive lineman from the Atlanta area after it offered him a football scholarship on Monday.

Andrew Marshall, a 6-foot-4, 270-pounder from West Forsyth High School, lists Georgia Tech, Duke and Wake Forest as his favorites, among 13 offers.

“(Georgia Tech assistant Bryan) Cook sent me a Facebook message to tell me to call him,” Marshall said. “But I couldn’t really call him because I was in school. But then my (high school) coach called me out of class, saying they were texting him wanting me to call.

“So I went in the hall, and gave them a call for a few minutes. I talked to Coach Cook, and he said they were going to offer. They liked my film, and they liked me at camp. They just had to wait and work some things out. The time was right now, so they offered me.”

What was Marshall’s reaction to the offer? “I’m very excited. Georgia Tech has a great education, and great football. I like the fact that it’s close to home. Those are all some things that are big to me. My parents are excited about it, too.”

Marshall said he also talked briefly to Georgia Tech offensive line coach Mike Sewak, although they didn’t really get into specifics about his projected position. He may get a look at tackle, but will likely play center or guard.

Marshall plans to take an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech this week or next to talk further with the coaches. His other offers include Duke, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Navy, Middle Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, East Carolina, South Alabama, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana-Lafayette and San Diego State.

“I’m still not sure (on when I will commit),” Marshall said. “I don’t want to wait too much longer, but I’m not in any rush right now. We’ll see what else what happens.

“I want to try to make it to a game at Wake Forest and Georgia Tech and talk to people there. I’m in no rush. My parents want me to take it kind of slow so I can make the decision once, and not de-commit or anything.”

Marshall is rated as a 3-star and state’s No. 95 overall prospect in the 247sports composite rankings.

Georgia Tech has 15 commitments for its 2014 class, but only one sure offensive lineman – Jake Stickler. A couple of other committed multi-purpose athletes (TE Trey Klock and DE Michael Preddy) could play on the line, too.

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
