Georgia Tech's recruiting class for 2014

By Michael Carvell

Georgia Tech has offered more college football prospects at an earlier rate this year because it plans to sign the largest class since Paul Johnson was hired as coach in 2007. The Yellow Jackets initially projected to sign a full class of 25 recruits in February 2014, but now it's looking more like 20-23. The number could change, depending on attrition.

Georgia Tech needs depth everywhere across the board, and particularly along the offensive and defensive lines, along with the defensive secondary.

Johnson says state of Georgia will always be Georgia Tech’s No. 1 recruiting priority, but this year the Yellow Jackets are making a concentrated effort to target high-academic kids from out-of-state schools to provide them with a larger pool of prospects.

New Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof is leading the team’s charge after defensive recruits with high expectations. Finally, Georgia Tech finally coughed up some bucks for much-needed resources, and quadrupled its recruiting staff from one full-time worker to four.

Here’s a look at Georgia Tech’s 2014 commitments. Please click on a player’s name for a bio:

Adjusments possible for Tech offensive line

In BYU, Georgia Tech will face a defense that is one of the toughest in the nation to score against and has a playmaking force in outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

Freshman J.J. Green comes through for Georgia

Tailback J.J. Green said he can’t say for sure how many times he has heard “you’re one play away from playing” from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon.

Yellow Jackets even found trouble during pregame

Here is a clue that your trip to sunny south Florida may not be a carefree vacation: You’re a football team, and you lose one of your starters during warm-ups.

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
