Dontavius Russell: UGA DT from Carrollton

  • comment(55)

Prospect: Dontavius Russell, defensive tackle, Carrollton (Ga.) High School, Class of 2014

Colleges: Committed on the spur of the moment to UGA among his 12 offers on April Fool's Day 2013. "I never had any top schools, so I was just as surprised as everybody else when I committed. If had to pick somebody as runner-up, I'd have to say Auburn, Florida and Alabama."

Why UGA? “It's a big-time SEC school," Russell said. "I had offers from a lot of schools just like Georgia, and Georgia was an in-state school. I liked that, and I liked the coaching staff. When I talked to Coach Richt (in person), everything he said sounded real good. He was talking how he could help me outside of football in being a good person."

Vitals: 6-foot-3, 310 pounds, 3.6 GPA, and undecided about his college major.

Recruiting rankings: TBA

Things to know: Comes from same Georgia high school, Carrollton, as two former UGA players, Reggie Brown and Jamie Henderson -- who both later played in the NFL

They said it: "“I think the sky is the limit for Dontavius. His best football is still ahead of him. You just don’t find guys with that kind of size, and that kind of mobility – and then you put on top of it that he has a 3.6 GPA. They don’t come around often. He’s a high-character kid. He’s kind of a homebody and doesn’t party. He’s nice and quiet. He’s a young man who loves football and wants to get a quality education.” -- Carrollton football coach Rayvan Teague

Something people are surprised to know? "I can cook, and people don't expect stuff like that. I look up (the recipes), try to make it, and it usually comes out right. The best thing I make is over-baked chicken. It just all started because I was hungry one day and my mom wasn't home. I had to eat, so I cooked something. That got me into trying things."

Favorite non-coach teacher? "I had an English teacher in the seventh grade named Ms. Mitchell. She would always encourage us to achieve more and do more than we thought we could. She was a big influence on me."

Hobbies? "I like to play basketball. I never played for the school teams. I don't like playing against real basketball players. I like playing against people at the same (talent) level so it can be fun. Yes, I try point guard . Sometimes when I get the ball, I try to keep it."

Dogs have resolve but they’re running out of bodies

If nothing else, Georgia has ensured at least one thing about its season. Regardless of where the rest of the schedule takes them, whether its to an SEC championship, a BCS bowl bid or a national title, there will be no claims from outsiders that this team received too many breaks and escaped health issues, no suggestions that the road to success was lined with lollipops and unicorns.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
