If you have a habit of dropping your smartphone or sliding it across your desk, then you want the device to be Google’s Moto X, according to a SquareTrade “breakability” test.
Meanwhile, Apple’s newest phones, the top-of-the-line 5S and cheaper 5C, which flew off store shelves over the weekend (see the update below) tested less durable than the phone they are replacing, the iPhone 5. And the Samsung Galaxy S4 came in last place.
SquareTrade, which provides gadgets that protect devices, reviewed each smartphone and scored them on a scale of 1 (low risk) to 10 (high risk) on overall durability. They were dropped at 5 feet, submerged in water and slid across a table. Researchers also considered physical features, such as size, front and back panel design, materials, edge construction and weight.
All of the phones had a medium risk of being damaged and all flunked in size. The Moto X, however, which had a score of 4.5, was the only device that received smiley faces in most of the test’s categories, including gripability, water resistance, back panel , slide and drop.
The iPhone 5S, which had a score of 5.5, fared worse in the slide test and the iPhone 5C, which had a score of 6, suffered from increased “smashability” in the drop test despite Apple’s assurances that the 5C’s hard plastic makes it very durable. The 5C had a cracked screen after the drop and was somewhat erratic after the water test. The iPhone 5 scored a 5.
UPDATE on 5S and 5S sales
Apple says shoppers have snapped up at least 9 million of its newest iPhones since the devices were launched Friday - way more than analysts had expected (5 million to 6 million). Apple also said demand is exceeding supply, especially for the gold 5S
If it’s a choice between boasting about having the top-of-the-line and boasting about having the cheapest of the top-of-the-line, clearly Apple enthusiasts are going with the first boast, if new data on wireless carrier activation is any indication. This is what Localytics has found since the two phones went on sale Friday:
In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined now represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile. From the data we are seeing, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s and just 0.31% are iPhone 5c. That means that the iPhone 5s outshines the 5c by a factor of 3.4x, a clear indicator that the early adopters are favoring the high-end 5s compared to 5c.
Localytics reasoned that many of the customers who were determined to wait in line for the new Apple devices weren't going to settle for economy class when they could go first class.
