Apple’s new iPhones, the 5S and much cheaper 5C, go on sale Friday.
Estimates by analysts who follow the Cupertino, Calif.-based company put projected sales between 5 million and 6 million through Sunday. The company sold 5 million of its 5s over the weekend during smartphone's launch a year ago.
Millions of “i” enthusiasts opting to keep their current devices spent much of Wednesday and Thursday trying to download the latest operating system, iOS 7, with varying degrees of success.
The new iPhones – starting at $99 for the 5C and the $199 for the 5S with a two-year contract – already come with the improved operating system, in addition to new apps, new colors and better security. Retailers and AT&T, Verizon and Sprint began taking orders for the 5C last week. T-Mobile is also offering the phone, but without a two-year contract.
As usual, expect long lines to get into Apple stores for the new devices. CNN reports TaskRabbits, a hiring service for odd jobs, is advertising a “line-sitter” service for those who are willing to pay others to stand in line for them .
Users go to TaskRabbits.com to request a line-sitter with the price they are willing to pay for the service. TaskRabbits can also bid to do the job for more or less than the requested price. The user then chooses the "rabbit" he or she wants to use. TaskRabbits says it does background checks on the available service providers listing with its service. TaskRabbits suggests a price of $14 per hour for people to wait in line for the new iPhones, the report said.
Along with the price of the phones, cases from Apple are available for $29.99. CNET, however, has just published a review of other case options. CNET notes that while some of the existing iPhone 5 cases may fit the 5C and 5S, others may interfere with the new fingerprint sensor on the home button that comes with the 5S and interfere with an additional LED flash for the camera on the back of the phones.
For those of you sticking with your existing Apple devices, the iOS 7 is available for download, though you still may run into a delay. The new software is available for users with the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, the iPad 2, iPad third and fourth generation, the iPad mini and the iPod touch 5th generation. Don't forget to back up your device before downloading the new software.
Will you be lining up early Friday to get your hands on one of the newest iPhones?
