Apple, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, along with select retailers, began taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 5C early Friday.
The device for budget-conscious consumers starts at $99 with a 2-year contract, except with T-Mobile, which doesn’t require a contract but offers the phone at full price with monthly payments.
The device will be shipped beginning Sept.20, the same day the new 5S hits stores. Apple unveiled the new phones Tuesday. The phones replace the iPhone 5.
What you end up paying for the phones and different data plans that they require depends on device and the company you choose. IMore has come up with a very detailed comparison of data plans to help consumers decide which provider best fits their needs.
Walmart came out of the box undercutting the lowest prices for the 5C and 5S. The retailer is selling the 16GB iPhone 5c for $79 and the 5s for $189. Customers must sign a two-year contract with either AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. Walmart is selling the 5C $20 cheaper and the 5S $10 cheaper than the others. According to The Los Angeles Times, Wal-Mart said Apple is not selling the devices to the retailer at a discount.
Apple and the phone service providers all offer the 16GB 5C for $99 with a two-year contract, but the providers have come up with different strategies to get the new phones in customers’ hands.
AT&T, for example, offers two plans with a range of prices depending on the devices’ storage capacity and whether the customer chooses a two-year plan or the new AT&T Next program, which allows enrollees to get a new phone each year on a no-interest installment plan. Under the Next program the 5C is $22 a month for 20 months, pricing the phone at $440. The cost doesn’t include the cost for the data plan.
Sprint on Friday introduced a “ Unlimited My Way” plan that, for at least $80 a month, gives customers unlimited talk, text and data while on the Sprint network. The company said customers can save $30 a month compared with what AT&T and Verizon charge for comparable plans.
T-Mobile, which has no contract, is offering the 5C 16GB for $549 and the 32GB for $659 through 24 monthly payments.
