It’s time for you to take that much needed vacation, countdown mode started the second you booked your trip. But, while on vacation, staying healthy and making good choices can be a major challenge.  I understand it can be difficult--All-You-Can-Eat buffets, local food favorites, gas station pit stops, airports. But setting up a game plan before you go will make it easier for you to stay on track.

Here are 5 easy tips to stay healthy while still enjoying your vacation.

TIP 1: BYOF" Bring Your Own Food!

One way to stay on track, and I do this all the time while traveling, is to "Bring Your Own Food."

My travel ammo bag is loaded with healthy choices: fruit, unsalted trail mix, raw nuts, low sugar protein bars.  This is easy to pack if you're flying.  But, if you're taking a road trip you can pack a cooler with healthier choices. Take an extra 15 minutes to make sandwiches, fruit, granola, water and limit sugary sodas.  This will help you stay on track and avoid the pitfalls of travel on the road.

TIP 2: Get Active

Just because you're on vacation does not mean your workout takes a vacation too. Instead of taking taxis or driving everywhere, take a walk or plan a hike with the family.  I notice I have the best workouts while on vacation.  You can take advantage of your downtime and try something new. For example, if you're on a beach vacation, take a walk on the beach in the morning. Or try something different like surfing or kayaking. Many resorts offer actives, get the whole family involved.

Tip 3: Don't eat until you drop

Sometimes this can be challenging, especially with the unlimited choices before you, screaming "try me!"  This can be overwhelming because everything looks good, plus you feel entitled since  "you're on vacation, right!"  Well, a great way to combat this is to splurge on one meal but not every meal. This is a tool I use while on vacation --I stick to low-calorie choices, like egg white omelets for breakfast or whole wheat wraps, filled with lean proteins and veggies for lunch, with healthy snacks in between meals mostly fruit with some raw nuts.  For dinner I will stick to lean proteins and veggies and splurge on a dessert.  I'm a sucker for carrot cake, my favorite. This way, you enjoy your vacation without bringing home the extra pounds.

Tip 4: Drink water!

Water will do wonders for you while on vacation. So if you're tempted to snack while on vacation, try water.  It will fill you up, hydrate you, and sideline your urge to snack.

Tip 5: Try lower calorie drinks

If you plan on kicking back with a few drinks, opt for lower calorie options.  Choosing what you drink can impact your waistline.  For example, if the special cocktail at the swim-up bar sounds too good to pass up, go ahead and order one, but only one. But, on your second round, try to choose a light beer or a liquor and diet soda instead.  You are on vacation but liquid calories are very sneaky.  It's easy to consume and loose track. Remember, all alcohol has calories, so the more you drink, the more calories you’re clocking in. Try to stay mindful while still enjoying your vacation.

With these 5 tips you're set and ready to enjoy your vacation without the regret. Remember have a game plan, get creative, stay active, take lots of pictures, and don't forget the sunblock!
