The Hawks have extended a non-roster training camp invitation to forward James Johnson.
The agency Priority Sports tweeted the news of a contract earlier this week, but I have confirmed with the Hawks that Johnson received a camp invitation and not a guaranteed deal. He also reportedly had work outs with the Spurs and Jazz.
Johnson (6-foot-9, 248) played last season for the Kings. He averaged 5.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 16.3 minutes in 54 games.
Johnson was a first-round draft pick (16th overall) of the Bulls in 2009. He also played with the Raptors in his four NBA seasons. In 219 career NBA games, he has averages of 6.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 18.3 minutes. He also did a stint in the NBA Development League.
After two seasons at Wake Forest, Johnson declared himself eligible for the draft in 2009.
With Johnson, the Hawks have 19 players on their training camp roster. The number includes 14 players under contract and five invitees that also include Damien Wilkins, Royal Ivey, David Lighty and Eric Dawson. The team can carry a maximum of 15 players on the roster. General manager Danny Ferry prefers to carry 14 players to have the flexibility of an open roster spot. The health of Lou Williams, returning from a torn ACL, could necessitate a 15th player at least in the short term.
There figures to be competition at the big guard/small forward position once training camp begins Oct. 1.
