Offseason odds and ends

Lou Williams
Status of Lou Williams, rehabbing from a torn ACL, is still a factor in determining Hawks' roster.

By Chris Vivlamore

A few odds and ends from the offseason before we crank up a new season with the start of training camp Oct. 1.

 * You remember that Hawks assistants Quin Snyder and Kenny Atkinson were granted permission to interview for the head coach position with the Sixers. The job was filled by Spurs assistant Brett Brown in August. I’m told that Snyder withdrew his name from consideration. Atkinson did interview for the position before Brown was hired.

 * As I wrote last week, David Lighty and Eric Dawson will be non-roster training camp invites. Andonis Thomas is likely to be another invite, although nothing is official at this point. Thomas has been working out in Atlanta this offseason. He was part of the Hawks summer league roster. The 6-foot-7 small forward, an undrafted free agent out of Memphis, appeared in three summer league games. He averaged 1.3 points and 0.3 rebounds in 9.7 minutes.

 * The Hawks have 14 players on their current roster with Lighty and Dawson coming to training camp. The Hawks will most likely add two more players and as many as four come the start of camp. Another guard and small forward could be added. I expect the Hawks to keep just 14 on the roster for the regular season. General manager Danny Ferry likes to have the flexibility of the additional roster spot. The status of Lou Williams, rehabbing from a torn ACL, is still a factor in determining the roster.

 * A couple of Hawks are playing internationally this summer. Newly signed power forward/center Pero Antic is playing for Macedonia in Eurobasket 2013. In four games, he is averaging 13.3 points and 8.8 rebounds as Macedonia was gone 1-3 (five points) in Group B play. Macedonia plays Latvia today.

Gustavo Ayon, claimed off waivers from the Bucks this summer, is playing for Mexico in the 2013 FIBA Americas tournament. Ayon has helped Mexico to the semifinals of the tournament where it will play Argentina Tuesday. Mexico is 6-2, including a 3-1 Pool B record. In the eight games, Ayon has averaged 16.4 points and 8.0 rebounds. Mexico clinched a spot in the FIBA World Cup tournament next year in Spain.

 * It’s been quiet the past few weeks. I have been working on feature story that I think most Hawks fans will find very interesting (that’s called a tease in the business). It has required an extensive number of interviews. I’m not sure the exact date it will publish as it is still in the works. Stay tuned.

I will be slowed the next several weeks for a final trip to stick my feet in the ocean and a shoulder surgery before the seven-day-a-week gig begins.

I will keep you posted with any further developments before training camp.
