John Jenkins will not be making the Hawks' road trip for the first two games of the exhibition season against the Heat and Bobcats.
The guard was experiencing lower back spasms at Sunday's practice. He participated in some of the drill work but stayed behind when the team left for Miami. According to coach Mike Budenholzer, the team made the decision for precautionary reasons.
"We are just being extra cautious and making sure we keep him healthy and take our time," Budenholzer said. "We want to make sure he is OK."
Jenkins revealed at the start of training camp that he shut down for two months this summer because of a small ligament tear in his back. The injury caused some fluids to leak and a bulging disk.
Jenkins said the injury was discovered after he returned from the Las Vegas Summer League in July. He declared himself at 100 percent on the eve of camp.
“I wasn’t hurt that bad,” Jenkins said. “I fought through it. I thought it was just a tight muscle. After summer league I got it checked out. … I played on it when I probably shouldn’t have. I had to pay for it by sitting out two months.”
The Hawks will open the seven-game exhibition season against the Heat in Miami Monday night. They will travel to Asheville, N.C. for a game against the Bobcats Tuesday.
