Training camp report - Korver, Carroll with first unit

By Chris Vivlamore

Vivlamore reporting from Athens.

The Hawks opened training camp today with a workout at the Coliseum Training Facility on the campus of the University of Georgia (quite an impressive building I might add). They went from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will go again in a closed session from 5:15-8:30 p.m.

Coach Mike Budenholzer and his staff are introducing the playbook (see my story on myajc.com later today). There were a number of scrimmages during the part of the morning session opened to the media.

The first unit was Jeff Teague, Kyle Korver, DeMarre Carroll, Paul Millsap and Al Horford. A lot can change between now and the regular-season opener on Oct. 30 but I’m inclined to think that will be the starting five.

The second unit was Dennis Schroder, John Jenkins, James Johnson, Pero Antic and Elton Brand.

The third was unit Royal Ivey, Damien Wilkins, Adonis Thomas, Eric Dawson and Gustavo Ayon.

The fourth unit was Shelvin Mack, Jared Cunningham, David Lighty, Dawson and Ayon.

Lou Williams, returning from a torn ACL, participated in non-contact drills but did not play in the five-on-five scrimmages. Jeff Teague was a full participant as he had his sprained right wrist taped. Mike Scott tweaked his ankle and did not play in the scrimmages that I was allowed to watch so I’m not sure where he played.

I asked Budenholzer after the practice about Johnson playing the small forward position with the second unit. He said not to read too much into the move.

“You have to put some guys out there is some positions. That is one of the great parts about this camp. There are going to be guys competing for positions. The whole group, we are all learning and figuring each other out. There is a good group of possibilities for that position and I wouldn’t read anything extra with him being with that second group today.”

Johnson (6-foot-9, 248), who played with Jeff Teague for two seasons at Wake Forest, enters his fifth NBA season. He is on a non-guaranteed training camp invitation. The former first-round pick (No. 16 by the Bulls in 2009) has averaged 6.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 blocks in 18.3 minutes in 219 career games with the Bulls, Raptors and Kings.

“The only expectation I have right now is the make the team” Johnson said Monday at the team’s media day event. “It’s as simple as that. It’s going to be a dogfight at camp. There are a lot of great players out there. You have three or four guys who can all play this spot.”

I know I’m behind (no excuses!) but later tonight I will post some of the best quotes from media day. I spoke to every player so I will try to give you some insight on what each had to say.
