The wait continues for Josh Smith.

Neither Al Horford nor Smith was named as an Eastern Conference reserve for the NBA All-Star game, leaving the Hawks without a representative in next month’s exhibition. The Hawks frontcourt players were overlooked in favor of Chris Bosh, Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng in a vote by league coaches. Filling out the East reserves were backcourt players Kyrie Irving, Paul George and Jrue Holiday.

“Al and Josh are both having strong seasons and have been key players in our early season to date,” Hawks general manager Danny Ferry said. “While being named an All-Star is a nice honor, they have been primarily focused on their teammates and helping us achieve team success.”

Dwyane Wade, Rajon Rondo, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett and Carmelo Anthony were previously named Eastern Conference starters in fan balloting.

Smith, the Hawks leading scorer at 16.7 points a game, was thought by many to have a chance to finally be named an All-Star in his ninth season. His chances may have been hurt last week after he was suspended by the Hawks for one game for conduct detrimental to the team.

“You talk bad to coaches, other coaches hear that,” TNT analyst Kenny Smith said during the network’s broadcast of the reserves.

Horford, a two-time All-Star, missed last season’s game after tearing his left pectoral muscle just 11 games into the season. His chances may have been hurt by the league’s decision to select frontcourt players, both forwards and centers, this season.

The two, each named an Eastern Conference Player of the Week this season, may also have been hurt by the Hawks’ recent slide. After starting the season 20-10, the Hawks won just four times in January before coaches turned in their votes earlier this week.

Statistical arguments can be made for both Smith and Horford.

Smith is tied for eighth, with George, in the Eastern Conference in scoring/rebounds/assists average at 28.8. Every player ahead of him, excluding the injured Anderson Varejao, made the All-Star team as a starter or reserve. Horford is 10th at 28.7. Garnett, Bosh, Chandler, Noah and Deng all are behind the Hawks in the statistical category.

Horford is second in the Eastern Conference with 21 double-doubles. Smith is tied for eighth with 16 double-doubles and is third in blocks. Only Bosh and Deng average more points per game than Smith and Horford (15.6) of the frontcourt reserves selected.

It was the first All-Star selection for Chandler, George, Holiday, Irving and Noah.

Hawks guard Jeff Teague was also on the fan ballot with Horford and Smith.

The Western Conference reserves were Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldridge, James Harden, David Lee, Tony Parker, Zach Randolph and Russell Westbrook. They joined starters Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul.

The All-Star Game will be played at Houston’s Toyota Center on Feb. 17.
