Game thread: Hawks play Magic without extra guard

ORLANDO -- The Hawks will play the Magic tonight down a point guard as the team chose not to re-sign Jannero Pargo after the expiration of his second 10-day contract.

There is still a possibility that the Hawks could re-sign Pargo for the remainder of the season. However, by getting through tonight’s game the Hawks have another week, until after the All-Star break, to make a decision. Also, the Feb. 21 NBA trade deadline is approaching and could lead to roster changes.

Two factors played into the Hawks’ decision – the health of Devin Harris and the specific matchup against the Magic. Harris is healthy enough to play after battling a sore left foot.

“We know that Devin had really been battling the sore foot and had he not been able to play tonight, then that would have opened up a whole new can of worms,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “We have him, so we have some options.”

The Magic use E’Twaun Moore to back up point guard Jameer Nelson. Moore could be seen more as a shooting guard, lessening the need for the Hawks to counter with another point guard.

* Anthony Tolliver remains in the Hawks starting lineup at small forward. Tolliver will be making his fourth straight start. The Hawks are 2-1 in the past three games with Tolliver in the lineup.

Drew said he likes the defensive presence that Tolliver brings. It also gives the Hawks a chance to limit some of the minutes of Kyle Korver.

Tolliver knows he is in the lineup for his defense but is hoping to find an offense rhythm soon.

“Defensively, I feel like it’s a lot easier to get into a rhythm,” Tolliver said. “On the offensive end, it’s going to take one of those games when everything goes in and I’ll feel like I’m in a flow. That hasn’t happened the last couple of games. I’ve made a couple shots but I haven’t really found that offensive rhythm but I feel like its close. … I feel like when I do hit shots its icing on the cake.”

* Also in the starting lineup will be Jeff Teague, Devin Harris, Josh Smith and Al Horford.

* Tolliver and his wife are expecting the birth of a child soon after the All-Star break. The Hawks have two home games following the break before departing on a six-game, 10-day road trip.

“It works out pretty good if everything goes as planned,” Tolliver said of the due date. “If it happens during the road trip and I’ll have to skip a little bit of it and join the team somewhere.”

It will be the fourth child born to the Hawks team and staff this season with the wives of Korver, video coordinator Luke Steele and public relations manager Jason Roose also delivering.

* Drew will spend the All-Star break in California with a chance to see both his sons play college basketball games – including once on the same day. He is scheduled to depart directly from Orlando Thursday morning.

Larry Drew II plays for UCLA and Landon plays at Cal State-Northridge. On Saturday, Feb. 16, UCLA plays at Stanford at 1 p.m. and Cal State-Northridge plays at University of California Davis at 7 p.m.
