Soft Surroundings: I’m a fan of reproduced furniture as a means to get the look you want, minus the original price tag. I recently discovered a new source from a website and catalog called Soft Surroundings. This catalog specializes in women’s apparel, beauty and bedding, and the company just launched a new furniture and decor line called Retreat Home Furnishings. For this new collection, the design team immersed itself in the countryside of Provence. The result is French reproduction furniture and vintage-inspired décor that’s reasonably priced, compared with the original pieces used for inspiration (also available for sale, listed on the website under “brocante antiques”). For example, an original French bar cabinet (pictured) sells for $2,399; the reproduction is $798. An original Fantine end table circa 1900 sells for $598; the Gabrielle reproduction is at $198.
