It doesn’t matter whether you’re a veteran AJC Peachtree Road Racer participant, or this is the first time you’re lacing up your shoes for the July 4th event: having a sturdy, supportive pair of shoes can mean the difference between running smoothly and getting injured.
Running shoes come in all sorts of types and styles, and buying a pair can seem a little overwhelming. I’m not here to guide anyone to a certain style or brand, but I will say this: if you have the time – especially if you’re a newbie -- head to a store that focuses on running or at least targets the outdoors or fitness.
They likely will have someone there who will ask questions about how often you’re going to run and where. Chances are, they can take a look at your feet to see which type of shoe works best.
Run around the store with the shoes on. If you feel silly, go outside.
And, no, you don’t have to buy the fancy socks they will try to sell you, though I confess to having a couple of pairs of those, too.
The AJC Peachtree Road Race is just six weeks away. Good luck with your training this week, everybody.
