Where do you run to prepare for the AJC Peachtree Road Race?

Some runners have no fear of 'Cardiac Hill.'

By Kristi E. Swartz

A newly hired co-worker recently asked for some of the best places to run in metro Atlanta.

“The Beltline,” someone piped up.

Indeed, on a recent Friday I had the pleasure of 1. Having the day off and 2. Using part of that time to dash down the Eastside trail. No hills, a gorgeous view of the city, and you don’t have to worry about stopping at traffic lights or getting hit by a car.

My other favorite spots include the always-popular Chastain Park and Silver Comet Trail as well as my nearby ‘hoods of Cabbagetown, Grant Park, Inman Park and points in between.

Some of my buds like Stone Mountain. Others wind through Piedmont Park.

Those places make for some hilly runs, but if you’re planning to participate in the AJC Peachtree Road Race and don’t practice running up some hills, you’ll be in for a rude awakening around mile No. 3. That’s the so-called Heartbreak Hill.

The climb starts just after you cross Peachtree Creek and keeps going just beyond Piedmont Hospital. It’s tough, but 60,000 people do manage to run, walk or shuffle up it every July 4.

Where are some of your favorite places to run? Veteran AJC Peachtree participants, where do you suggest first-time runners go to prepare for the race?

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
