AJC Peachtree Road Race: water, sunscreen, safety

AJC Peachtree Road Race
Don't forget to hydrate on race day.

By Kristi E. Swartz

Well, if you’ve been outside this week, you know summer is here in full force.

Someone sent me a message today saying temperatures around the start time of the AJC Peachtree Road Race on July 4 will be in the low-to-mid 70s.

But it’s been hotter than that, according to this photo gallery of AJC Peachtree starting temperatures.

I say all this as a reminder that it’s not too early to think about what you are eating and drinking in the days leading up to the big event. I’m not a nutritionist and will leave it up to others to offer suggestions – except to say: water is your friend. Drink early and often.

And, wear sunscreen. Even the speedy runners in Wave A will be out there for a while.

We’ve been giving a lot of attention to the fact that there will be increased security at the AJC Peachtree because of the Boston Marathon bombings. I, for one, am grateful just so I can have a little extra peace of mind. I included information from the AJC Peachtree emails.

Increased law enforcement presence:  There will be an increased law enforcement presence at the start, along the course and at the finish.

Increased number of restricted areas:  There will be an increased number of restricted areas at the start as well as at the finish in Piedmont Park, so please plan accordingly.  Additional fencing with designated entry and exit points will be in place around the Piedmont Park finish area.  Anyone entering a restricted area with a backpack, bag, purse, etc. will be subject to a search.

Leave backpacks or any other unnecessary items at home:  Whether you're planning on running or walking the event, volunteering or spectating, please pack light.  This means leaving any item at home that is not necessary for you to complete the event.  Remember, if you don't need it, don't bring it.

See something, say something:  Be vigilant.  If you see something suspicious, contact the nearest police officer or call 911.

Familiarize yourself with the Event Alert System (EAS): Colored flags will be located at the start line, along the course at the water stations and in the finish area.  The flags will communicate the specific alert level which could range from Low (Green) to Moderate (Yellow) to High (Red) to Extreme (Black) based on a variety of factors including weather conditions.

Happy running, everybody.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
