Bill Thorn to keep streak going

By Ken Sugiura

Rain or rain, Bill Thorn expects to be on the starting line for his 44th AJC Peachtree Road Race Thursday morning. Thorn, the only person to have run every Peachtree, is a spry 82.

“It’s just kind of one year at a time, when you’re this old,” Thorn said. “Just going to start and see if I can finish.”

Thorn, the track and cross country at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn, will run the course with his granddaughter Kenzie Thrasher. Last year, he completed the 10 kilometers in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 1 second. He placed second in the men’s 80-84 age group and finished ahead of 38 percent of the finishers.

Thorn continues his daily workout regimen, including trampoline, walking, running and stationary bike.

Thorn dismissed the forecast of rain, saying “It’s just all in your mind.” He coaches the runners at Landmark Christian to ignore the conditions.

“The way they got all that (running gear) now, everything seems to dry quick, even shoes,” Thorn said. “New types of materials. I like it.”

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
