AJC Peachtree Road Race: Rise up and run in the rain.

By Kristi E. Swartz

OK … so this post is about running in the rain.

It sort of comes full circle, as one of the first AJC Peachtree Road Race blogs was about running in the rain - - and what type of weather was almost “too extreme” to run in.

 I’m pulling this from myajc.com:

With just a day to go before the AJC Peachtree Road Race, the threat of lightning and flooding has race organizers questioning how to handle the annual July 4th event. City of Atlanta officials plan to go ahead with the race, but haven’t ruled out postponing the event.

Please keep checking back at href="http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/atlanta-weather-ajc-peachtree-road-race-could-be-s/nYbZJ/">ajc.com and follow the weather forecast for more.

Here are a few things about running in the rain.

  1. I bought a poncho … I may not run in it, but I’ll be wearing it en route to the AJC Peachtree and likely until I get in the start corral.
  2. Put your ID, Breeze card, credit card, cash, etc., in a small plastic bag so they stay dry.
  3. You’re going to get wet tomorrow. Everything you wear will get wet. Your shoes and socks will be soaked. This is just going to happen.
  4. Phones, electronics, gadgets … be careful. The arm-band sleeve-y things may not keep all of the rain out … a little ziplock bag may be helpful here, too.
  5. Be careful. I don’t think tomorrow is just about braving a little bit of rain. We’re in for some heavy downpours and flooding. The road will be wet. Be kind to others and to yourself – going slower is OK if is saves you from slipping and twisting an ankle or taking someone out.

I already know some people aren’t participating tomorrow. And that’s OK.

If you’re on the fence, just go for it. Here’s why:

  1. This is about tradition. You’re participating in the biggest 10K around. It’s the 44th AJC Peachtree Road Race, and yes there will be a 45th, but who wants to wait around for that? You can run then, too.
  2. You’ve prepared – at least a little bit, I hope. I don’t care if you’re running or walking – if you’ve put in the time for the big day, then see it through.
  3. You’ll have one amazing story to tell. Maybe I care about this because I get paid to tell other people’s stories. Think about it: this is going to be one heck of an adventure.
  4. Has anyone ever told you that you can’t do something? Or asked you to really think something through after you’ve set an ambitious goal? Did you do it anyway? Ok, well, here’s another opportunity to show them how tough you are.
  5. This is another chance to rise up, Atlanta. So what if it’s not football season. Not all 60,000 participants are football fans or even Falcons fans. This is the Super Bowl for running, and you get to participate no matter what. Rise up. Be strong.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
