AJC Peachtree Road Race: last-minute tips and FAQs

Yes, I know, we’re all talking about the weather. Let’s hold that thought for one moment. A half second?

Thanks.

We’re on the eve of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. 60,000 participants and 150,000 spectators.

Here’s a quick rundown of last-minute tips and things you need to know before tomorrow.

  1. Get ready tonight. I don’t mean sleep in your clothes, but pin your race number to whatever shirt you’re wearing. If you have a favorite pair of socks, find those now. Whatever gadget you run with, charge it.
  2. Even though it won’t be hot and sunny, the hydration rules still apply. You’re going to be running or walking more than 6 miles even though water will likely be pouring all over all of us.

Here’s some suggestions on what to eat the night before.

Not a breakfast fan? Your body needs fuel tomorrow morning, just remember that. And, whatever works for you in the morning, stick with it. If you’re a cereal person, fine. Your body may retaliate if you switch up your breakfast foods before running.

  1. Here’s a map of the start waves and start times.
  2. Here’s a bit about MARTA:
  • The morning schedule for trains: And MARTA tips for the Peachtree.
  • The trains will get crowded the closer you get to the start. If you’re going north from, let’s say North Avenue, it gets pretty jammed.
  • The Buckhead (North Springs) and Lenox (Doraville) trains get you there, but they do stop on different sides of the starting areas. If you’re meeting some friends at the race, just keep that in mind.

5. Leave extra time. The unthinkable – and silly – can happen and hold you up for even a few minutes. For example, I used a $20 last year at the MARTA machine (which does take credit cards, but again, it was early, and I don’t drink coffee on race days to kick-start my brain). So, a bunch of $1 coins came pouring out, and I had to dash back to the car to put them in the trunk.

That cost me 5 minutes … and I got the “you are a complete moron” look from my race buddy.

 Two FAQs:

1. Should we get there any early than our start waves?

This is purely up to you. Anyone who has gone to a race with me knows that I like to get there super early to warm up, stretch, stand in the looooooooooooong line for the bathroom and just work out pre-race jitters.

The AJC Peachtree is different. It' s more about the fanfare, the fun and the festival. But there are 60,000 people participating.

I know that's not a straight answer. If you're about to navigate through traffic or MARTA and feel comfortable arriving just before your start wave, then that's lovely.

2. A couple of readers said they were placed in earlier start waves than they think they should be in ... and weren't sure what to do.

Enjoy it. There are plenty of participants that have had the complete opposite happen. If you are worried about falling behind the crowd, just shuffle on over to the right hand side and keep going. It's OK.

Good luck, everybody.

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
