Stafford, Gray impress in Georgia scrimmage

Athens — Some "unofficial stats" from Monday's scrimmage, in which Georgia coach Mark Richt lauded the play of quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Logan Gray:

Stafford was 11-of-21 passing for 108 yards and one interception and no TDs. He drove down the field for field goals on their first two possessions, first from the 20 and then from the 30. Gray was 12-of-22 for 119 yards with a TD.

Caleb King was the leading rusher with 52 yards on 11 carries and Richard Samuel had 45 on 11 carries.

Demiko Goodman was the leading receiver with two catches for 61 yards and tight end Tripp Chandler had four catches for 34 yards and a TD. Freshman A.J. Green had three catches for 28 yards before leaving with an aggravated hip flexor.

Cornerback Remarcus Brown led the defense with 10 tackles and linebacker Darryl Gamble added seven.

Walsh looking good

Say this for Blair Walsh. The Bulldogs' freshman place-kicker is nothing if not confident.

Walsh emerged from Georgia's special teams-only scrimmage Monday morning feeling good and walking tall — or as tall as someone 5-foot-9 can.

"It was nice," said Walsh, rated the No. 1 placekicker prospect in the nation by USA Today and Scout.com. "Kicking in Sanford Stadium is definitely a treat. Kicking on the practice fields is nice but when you get in that stadium and you feel that, that's the coolest thing going."

Walsh went on to make all three of his field-goal attempts in the afternoon scrimmage, from 36, 37, and 38 yards, and all his PATs.

Walsh went on to say he feels sure he'll handle all placement kicks and kickoffs, even though Richt hasn't officially bestowed it on him.

"I have confidence that he thinks I'm the guy for it and I think I will be the guy for it," Walsh said. "But as far as making his decision publicly, I don't know if he'll even do that or just give me the nod before the game."

Allen to return kickoffs

Not that it should come as any surprise, since he set Georgia's single-season record last season, but Asher Allen will handle kickoff returns again.

Running backs coach Tony Ball, who oversees kickoff returns, said he's searching for some reliable backups among Remarcus Brown, Caleb King, Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas. They're the ones who got all the reps Saturday.

"Asher knows what he's doing. I need to look at those guys so I don't need to get Asher a bunch of reps," Ball said. "... Right now, until I can feel comfortable with someone else being able to field kicks — and that's the first thing you've got to be able to do — Asher's the guy."

True frosh on first team

Make of it what you will, but there were some new faces in the lineup when Georgia's No. 1 offense took the field for the first play of Monday afternoon's full-squad scrimmage, the first of the preseason.

Three true freshmen started: Richard Samuel at tailback, A.J. Green at split end and Cordy Glenn at right guard.

Green's presence is somewhat of a surprise since the Bulldogs five players ahead of him at split end before he arrived this summer. Freshman Tavarres King (ankle) and Walter Hill (broken hand) are out with injuries and junior Kris Durham was on the field at the same time for the opening play.

As for Samuel, starting tailback Knowshon Moreno remained in a green, non-contact jersey for the full-contact game simulation. So, for now, it appears to distinguish Samuel as the No. 2 tailback.

Glenn, from Riverdale, was starting ahead of redshirt freshmen Justin Anderson and Tanner Strickland. Strickland worked at center and true freshman Ben Jones at right guard with the No. 2 unit in pre-scrimmage warm-ups.
