It was in a Q&A session before the Jan. 9 game against Georgia Tech that Georgia basketball coach Dennis Felton promised UGA students he'd shave his mustache if the Bulldogs won a championship. A month after actually winning the SEC tournament title, he'll finally make good on that bet.

"If I had my way I 'd have done it sooner than now," said Felton, who will face the razor at UGA's Tate Student Center at noon, Friday. "It's just taken a long time. I left it up to our marketing people to get it organized."

Originally, Felton said they were going to do it last Saturday at the Georgia-Kentucky baseball game in which Bliss threw out the first pitch. But they decided to push it back to Friday and to the middle of campus so more students could be involved. UGA is offering free pizza and championship T-shirts.

"I've always really appreciated our students and how supportive they've been of our teams," Felton said. "They're really important to us. They're really our most important constituency because they are the peers to our players, their classmates. Somehow they latched onto my mustache. They'd put up the signs, 'Fear the 'stache.' So I think it's a lot of fun."

Some students contend Felton promised to also shave his head. That's not going to happen, Felton said.

"I don't think it'd be quite as much fun for me," Felton said. "I look really bad with a bald head. I've got a pointy head. I look like a joke. I shaved it off when I was at Howard University and that was the last time I did that. It's not pretty."

THIS AND THAT

Starting guard Billy Humphrey underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee and will be out for five months. He'll be ready for next season, Felton said. ... Former center Rashaad Singleton said he is transferring to Florida Southern, a I-AA school in Lakeland, Fla. "Most of my people wanted me to go D-I again but I couldn't stand to sit out any longer," said Singleton, who will be a senior.
