Georgia shortstop Gordon Beckham, Griffin High shortstop Tim Beckham and former Lee County High catcher Buster Posey are projected to be top-10 choices in June's amateur baseball draft, an article on Major League Baseball's Web site predicts.
In an article published online Wednesday, Jonathan Mayo predicts that Posey, a catcher with Florida State, will go No. 1 to the Tampa Bay Rays. Posey was the Georgia high school Gatorade player of the year in 2005, when he hit .462 and was 13-0 as a pitcher. For Florida State, he is hitting .469 this year with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs in 52 games.
Griffin's Beckham, who has signed with Southern Cal, is predicted to go No. 5 to the San Francisco Giants. Beckham was hitting .500 for the Bears through last Wednesday with five home runs in 78 at-bats. Baseball America has rated him as the top high school prospect in the country.
The University of Georgia's Beckham, who is hitting .402 with 22 home runs for an SEC championship team, is projected to go No. 8 to the Chicago White Sox. Beckham played at Atlanta's Westminster School and is no relation to Griffin's Beckham.
